UCLA Academy

Based on campus at UCLA, one of the most prestigious colleges in California, students get a real taste of life in the Golden State - visiting world-famous Hollywood and Beverly Hills, relaxing on beautiful beaches like Malibu and Venice, and spending the day at Disneyland or Universal Studios. 

Students can take advantage of UCLA's sports facilities, which are also used for many on-campus activities and a modern dining room where students are offered a healthy and balanced diet.

Accommodation

The accommodation on campus has all the facilities students may need with several communal areas to meet friends.

The rooming format is twin bedroom with communal bathroom. Each room is equipped with a desk and ample closet space. Twin standard rooms or multi-bedded rooms upon request.

Boys and girls are accommodated on opposite ends of the floor and are well supervised by Residence Advisors.

Supervision is provided by EC residential staff who support students outside class and activity times and ensure students observe the curfew and required standards of behaviour.

UCLA Facilities

Classrooms

All classrooms are located in the main campus and building area of the school at  UCLA, close to the students’ accommodation. All classrooms use projectors and have Wi-Fi access. The classes are small sizes with a maximum of 12 students in each class.

Dining Hall

The bright and modern dining hall is located a short walk from the residence. It is buffet style with a choice of many different global cuisines for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is different everyday, which encourages students to sample a variety of foods. All dietary requests and needs can be catered for.

Internet Facilities

There is Wi-Fi access across the whole campus.

Mobile Phones

Students can bring their mobile phones but must not use them in class or activities unless directed to. 

Shops

Westwood Village is just a 20-minute walk away and has many retail shops, cafes and restaurants. There is also a pharmacy for students to purchase toiletry supplies if they need.Students will be supervised when going to the local shops and are only permitted at the discretion of the summer school management. No students can leave the premises unsupervised.

Academy Shop

The campus store (a shop selling sweets, drinks and other items, outside of usual meal times and snack times) may be open at specified times. Students can also purchase UCLA souvenirs and merchandise from this store.

The Academy Office

The EC Academy office is located in the same building as the residence and is open daily within office hours.

Sports Facilities

There are excellent sports facilities across the campus such as outdoor sports fields, an indoor sports hall with a gym and outdor swimming pools.

Swimming Pool

There are two heated outdoor swimming pools on-site for use when a lifeguard is present at scheduled times. These are located close to the residence.

Laundry

Students have access to laundry in the residence building. They will purchase a Bruins Card that they can top up in order to use the facilities. In their first week, we will provide a laundry class and students are then free to use the facilities on free evenings once staff are notified

Cleaning

Communal areas including bathrooms are cleaned every day. Bedrooms are cleaned and linen, including towels are changed once a week but students are responsible for keeping their rooms neat and tidy and emptying the garbage and recycling daily.

Towels

Towels are provided and students should bring their own toiletries.

Safe

All students’ travel documents will be stored in our school safe on arrival. Access will be given as needed to the travel documents and all access to the safe will be recorded. Students’ must take care of their cash and other valuable belongings. We cannot take responsibility for items not locked away.

Keys

Each student will have a room key card and will be responsible for their key card. If they lose it, they need to arrange a replacement with the reception at a cost. This key card will give them access to the residence and the dining hall.

Night Security

There is 24/7 reception in the residence hall as well as campus security and police. We also have night supervision every night from staff.

Welfare and Medical

Each staff member on the team is First Aid and CPR trained and so can assist with minor medical emergencies. If there are significant medical needs we will transport the student to the nearest doctor or hospital. The student/parent/agent is responsible for any off-site transport and medical costs in these cases. Residence Advisors and all staff will supervise and ensure the students are eating well and healthy, participating and happy.

UCLA Programme

Mornings

Each weekday morning students will have lessons from 9:00am until 12:30pm. There will be three hours of lessons with one break of 20 minutes. There will be a snack and drink provided during the 20-minute break.

Afternoons

Each afternoon, students will take part in their chosen specialist course.

The choice of courses available is:
Surfing, Multi Activities, 

It  is possible to change course from week to week but it must be confirmed by the agent or parent through Admissions at Head Office by 3pm on the Friday before the Monday of each week. We cannot do course changes from day to day or mid-week except for proven medical reasons.

Each course runs for 8* hours per week in the afternoons between 14:00pm and 16:00pm. From 16:30pm to 17:30pm, all students will participate in a whole school activity hour.

*The  8  hours  may  be  over  3  or  4  afternoons  depending  on  school  and  course provider if external.

UCLA Specialist Courses

Multi Activities

With swimming pools available as well as fantastic sports facilities and spacious grounds, our activities team organise a different combination of sports and activities every day to ensure a varied week. Students will spend 2 hours per day over 4 days participating in a selection of activities that may include football and swimming, as well as treasure hunts and team games.
From 16:30pm to 17:30pm, all students will participate in a whole school activity hour.

Surfing

On our surfing programme, students will start with basics of surfing including safety, basics and etiquette, as well as some practise. They will also learn about ocean ecology and conservation to complement their surfing practise. Students will expect to enjoy at least  4 days per week out surfing, at least 2 hours each session. All of our instructors are certified members of The International Surfing Association (ISA) and will be there to help students every step of the way.

From 16:30pm to 17:30pm, all students will participate in a whole school activity hour.

The Meal Plan

Breakfast is a combination of continental and cooked 7 days a week and includes fruit juice, cereals, toast, pastries, preserves, tea and coffee. The hot counter usually includes bacon, egg, oatmeal, breakfast biscuits and gravy. There is also a well-stocked fruit salad bar and a waffle counter.

Lunch and Dinner are served buffet style with a variety of cuisines from all over the world that changes daily. Options range from Asian and Mexican delicacies to burgers and fries, pizza and an extensive salad and vegetable bar. There is also a dessert, tea and coffee counter with an array of desserts offered daily. Most importantly! There is a self-serve, soft serve ice-cream station with cones and sprinkles.

Packed lunches are given to students on Saturday and Sunday when they go on their full-day excursions. They consist of a roll or round of sandwiches, plain water, biscuit/chocolate or health bar, fruit and crisps. Snacks are given to the students twice a day on weekdays and once in the evening at weekends. They consist of health food bars or fruit or similar items and a drink. Fresh drinking water is available all day on-site. Students are encouraged to bring re-useable water bottles for their trip.

When students are out on Full-Day Extended Day Excursions, dinner will be offered outside the campus on a restaurant or similar.

The Evenings and Excursions

Students will participate in a variety of evening activities on site as well as occasional off-site trips. The evening activities include swimming tournaments, residence  tournaments, sports, local visits, arts nights, boys and girls nights, karaoke and discos among other things. Some of these off-site trips could be to the cinema, bowling or laser quest or local food or shopping outlets.

The main larger excursions take place every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
