Description of Accommodation

Any student will find that living in homestay accommodation is the best way to practise English outside the classroom. You will be treated as a close friend of the homestay host, couple or individual that you are staying with and will have your own freedom while being respectful to the family’s rules and expectations.

A homestay in the UK may consist of an adult couple with or without children or a single adult. It is the ‘Home Atmosphere’ that is the most important factor. There may also be up to three other students in the homestay but they will speak a different native language from yourself. Housing very much varies here in London.

You may be placed in a house (semi-detached/terrace and detached) or a bungalow or a flat/apartment. Homestays in London are of many different nationalities and backgrounds, but the main language spoken in the house will be English.
Homestays are arranged via EC and our Accommodation partner, Hosts International, who are registered with the British Council.

Meal Description

Students can choose between half board, bed and breakfast and self catering. If a student has chosen half board they can expect to have breakfast and evening meal with the homestay host every day. Breakfast can vary from one homestay to another and is usually provided on a self-service basis and will include cereals, toast, coffee and tea. Evening meals for most of the time will be with the host and students will eat what the members of homestay eat.

If you have chosen the self catering option – you’ll be able to use the kitchen facilities and keep food in the fridge. We just ask you to remember to leave the kitchen clean and as you found it after using it.

For those students requesting bed and breakfast, their homestay will provide breakfast only and students will at most be able to use the kettle and microwave in the kitchen and should not expect to be able to use the cooking facilities.

Some students may have allergies to food or prefer a vegetarian diet or in some cases simply not like a particular food, therefore it important that this information is shared and the information made available on the booking form so that the best match can be found when allocating a student to a homestay. Homestay providers will also prepare their meals to accommodate any specific requirements relating to religious beliefs, therefore it is important to mention this at the time of your booking.
