Stephen is a “local boy” who grew up in Greater Boston and has a passion for its culture and history. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a major in journalism and a minor in history. He earned his Master of Arts in Teaching from Simmon's College in Boston. In addition to his CTEFL and CELTA teaching certificates, Stephen is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Education to teach ESL, English, Social Studies, History, and Visual Arts.

Whenever discussing his career choice, Stephen likes to quote the Irish writer Brendan Behan who wrote, “There's no place on earth like the world!” Since 1993, he has taught in Boston, Massachusetts; Athens, Greece (Hellas); Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In addition to the University Foundation Program at EC Boston, he is the TOEFL iBT Coordinator for International House Boston. Stephen was also an instructor for six years in the prestigious Academic Bridge Program at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi where he was awarded exemplary merit for his contributions to the university. In addition to preparing his students for the TOEFL, the IELTS, and success in an English language medium university, he worked to promote cross-cultural understanding by helping young Emiratis learn, preserve, and share their culture in the “Nadi Al Hakaween” or Storytellersʼ Club that brought Emirati university students to local area schools so that they could share their culture by telling traditional folk tales.

Stephen believes that as a teacher, he should provide his students with a solid foundation in the skills and strategies required for a successful academic career while encouraging the self-reliance and creativity necessary for life-long, independent learning. Even with subjects that are considered by many students to be “boring,” he strives to consistently construct lessons that students find relevant and engaging by integrating technology, video, art, storytelling, and animation.
